How many species of Bearded Dragon are there?

They all come from Australia, but in total there are 9 types of bearded dragons (sub species of Pogona)

  • Pogona Microlepidota / Small Scaled or Drysdale River Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Minor Minor / Dwarf Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Minor Minima / Western Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Minor Mitchelli / Mitchells Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Nullarbor / Nullarbor Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Vitticeps / Inland or Central Bearded Dragon
  • Pogona Vittikins / Naturally occuring and captive crossbreed between P. Vitticeps and P. Henrylawsoni (aka P. Rankini)

Pogona Barbata / Coastal or Eastern Bearded Dragon

Also known asJew Lizard, Frilly Lizard (Not to be confused with the Frilled Lizard)
LocationCommon mostly found around Eastern Australia but has been found centrally as well as in the South
HabitatDry wooded areas
AppearanceGenerally grey/black in colour with colour tinge on forepart of the head, juveniles with lighter colours but strong patterns
Overall Adult LengthMale: 60cm / 24 inches
Female: 50cm / 20 inches
DietOmnivore. Eats a range of insects (crickets, grasshoppers), worms, plants and small mice & reptiles
Behaviour / TraitsDiurnal – active during the day
Semi Arboreal – like to climb and live perched in trees but will move to lower cooler places
Typically terroritorial requiring more space with a less docile temperament than the Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona Vitticeps)

Pogona Henrylawsoni / Lawsons Bearded Dragon

Also known asPogona Brevis, Pogona Rankini, Pogona Vittikins (natural crossbred with Pogona Vitticeps), Rankin’s Dragon, Dumpy Dragon, Black Soil Bearded Dragon, also confused with the Dwarf Bearded Dragon
LocationCommon mostly found in central/ western Queensland,  Australia
HabitatHot, arid/dry rocky areas
AppearanceGenerally light in colour, Mix of beige/ khaki with a dark stripes under the chin , a light coloured stripe over the eye. Dark striping on the tail, small beard
Overall Adult Length30cm / 12 inches
DietOmnivore. Eats a range of insects (crickets, grasshoppers), worms, plants
Behaviour / TraitsDiurnal – active during the day
Semi Arboreal – they really love to climb!
Kept in captivity, they generally like to wave on the glass as a sign that they want to come out and poo on your carpet!

Pogona Microlepidota / Small Scaled or Drysdale River Bearded Dragon

LocationSmall coastal region (Drysdale river) in north Kimberley, in north west Australia
HabitatCoastal/ open woodland, bushes
AppearanceLess noticeable scales and spikes than other Pogona

Behaviour / TraitsNot much known, very rare

Pogona Minor Minor / Dwarf Bearded Dragon

Also known asOften confused with the Western Bearded Dragon and Mitchells Bearded Dragon since all three are sub species
LocationCommon mostly found around Western and central Australia
HabitatScrubland, woodland, rocky areas and desert
AppearanceDark in colour with shorter legs and tail than the other dragons typically with a smaller head and almost unnoticeable beard
Overall Adult Length35-40cm / 14-18 inches

DietOmnivore. Eats a range of insects (crickets, grasshoppers), worms, vegetation. Generally will eat more vegetation than insects after sexual maturity.
